A reading countdown should leave a usable way to finish the explanation. Consider a fictional card-term exercise that closes its text too soon. Compare its reading controls, not the reader’s speed. This is not advice to extend a live round or security code.
Three ways to handle the countdown
Untimed reading mode: the card explanation remains available without a limit. This is the clearest option when the purpose is reading rather than speed.
Adjustable duration: the reader chooses a period before starting. This preserves a timed exercise while allowing the reading pace to match the task.
Extend control: a visible control provides more time during the explanation. Under WCAG’s timing guidance, an author-controlled limit can generally be turned off, adjusted or extended, although essential timing, real-time activity and very long-duration exceptions can apply. What to record in a screen check
For a hypothetical card, record three observations: the start notice, the control that is available, and whether the same explanation remains reachable. For example, note that “the explanation begins after a countdown”, “an adjustable-duration menu appears before reading”, or “an extend control is visible beside the text”. Then check whether selecting that option keeps the current explanation open, rather than sending the reader to a new card or a general screen.
Record absent controls plainly. A decorative timer message does not establish that a hidden shortcut or later replay will provide more time.
Limits of the comparison
Removing every timer is not always required. A genuinely real-time activity or an essential time limit may fall within an exception. A rapidly moving clock alone does not make an explanation a real-time event. The check should therefore compare the purpose of the task with the available reading choice, without claiming certification, accessibility compliance or any result for a particular website.
